Everything you need to know about the Microblading procedure

Updated: Feb 13, 2023

WHAT IS MICROBLADING?

Microblading is the newest eyebrow permanent makeup procedure within the beauty industry. Microblading is a semi-permanent form of cosmetic tattooing.

The procedure is performed by using a slim hand held tool called a microblade which is a used together with a blade that contains tiny barely there fine needles to create featherweight strokes while implanting a medical grade pigment into the epidermis layer of the skin and creating fine, realistic and natural hair strokes onto the brows to create an amazingly natural and authentic brow shape and look.

The needles do not fully penetrate the skin but just delicately scratch the surface, which can be compared to a paper cut. The final result? Realistic-looking brow hairs that don’t wash off for a year or more.

Unlike traditional tattoos, microblading is applied on the upper dermis of the skin causing it to dull more quickly than traditional tattooing techniques which makes it a semi-permanent treatment and a much more desirable service.

Microblading can last anywhere from 1-3 years depending on the persons skin care routine. The fading process can be slowed down with the use of sunblock and avoiding direct sunlight as well as skin care fading products such as Retinol and skin peeling treatments containing glycolic acid, lactic acid, salicylic acid, citric acids.

HOW IS THE MICROBLADING PROCEDURE PERFORMED?

First, we consult with our clients about their vision for their eyebrows as well as the analyzing the bone structure and facial features to find the best brow shape for their face and color that matches the natural hair color and skin undertone. We then take a before photo.

We then start every procedure by cleansing the skin with an alcohol and antiseptic soap. We then measuring the shape of your brows based on your facial structure. However, the eyebrows can be slightly modified based on your preference, eye width, eyebrow bone structure, etc. Once the shape is approved by you, we apply the strongest over-the-counter numbing solution for 15-20 minutes. Once you are fully numbed, then we will start the application of the hair strokes onto the brows.

The entire process from start to finish, usually takes 2.5-3 hours. After 4-6 weeks from the initial session, and once the eyebrows are fully healed, a touch up is recommended which will take roughly 2 hours to complete the touch up session will finalize the look and shape of your treatment by filling in any faded areas as well as lines that may have shrunk down in size during the healing process.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE FOR MY EYEBROWS TO HEAL? It will take 4-6 weeks for your eyebrows to fully heal and show the true shade and design pattern. Immediately after your session, the outer areas of your eyebrow will be slightly red and the color pigment will appear darker than usual. The redness and dark pigment is expected and will subside as the healing process continues.

  1. During the 1st and 2nd week, you will notice slight scabbing. Please do not pick at them as you will ruin the final result of your brows and damage the skin.

  2. During the 3rd and 4th week, the pigment of your eyebrows will become lighter and the true color will begin to show. The 3rd and 4th week is when new skin will begin to develop allowing your eyebrows to appear smoother.

  3. At the 5th week, your eyebrows will be fully healed and the final pigment of your eyebrows will be visible.

DOES MICROBLADING HURT?

There is very minimal pain involved in the treatment. It actually doesn’t hurt as such, it is more a sensation. The process itself is not painful thanks to the numbing ointment that is applied. It's sometimes the sound of the blade which people find worse – a small scratching sound. Nevertheless, we use the highest over-the-counter numbing solution to ensure that the process is bearable. We apply numbing frequently during the entire session and will ensure you are doing well through each step of the process. After your procedure, slight redness and mild burning can occur but will subside within a couple of hours.

HOW LONG DOES MICROBLADING LAST?

Permanent makeup can last up to 1-3 years. A touch up appointment is recommended 6-8 week after your initial service, but it is not required. We recommend at minimum a once a year "color boost" touch-up to maintain the procedure’s color however, we do advocate holding off for as long as possible to maintain skin integrity.

WHAT ARE YOUR PRE AND POST CARE INSTRUCTIONS? *Please read these instructions carefully to avoid any complications during and after your session and to achieve the best results.

  • Prior to your appointment, it is advised that you:

  1. Please avoid alcohol, ibuprofen, and caffeine for 48 hours prior to your appointment. This will cause the pigment to be pushed out.

  2. We recommend washing your hair before your appointment. You want to keep your brow area completely dry for 24 hours after your appointment.

  3. Please avoid tanning before your appointment.

  • After your session is completed, it is required that you:

The most important product you can use after a microblading treatment is sunscreen. Like with other tattoos, sunscreens helps extend the longevity of your brows and prevent against fading from the sun.

Avoid water for the first 24 hours after treatment.

  1. Rinse the treated area with warm water and a gentle antibacterial soap. (after 24 hours)

  2. Apply a thin layer of ointment (provided) with a cotton swap (to avoid bacteria) once a day for 3-4 days on the treated area.

  • Things to avoid immediately post treatment:

  1. Sweating / Exercising for the first 7 days (risk of infection)

  2. Steam room / Sauna / Swimming pool for 2 weeks

  3. Makeup on the treated area for 2 weeks (tattoos are open wounds!)

  4. Touching pets/animals

  5. Picking, rubbing, scrubbing, scratching (will cause pigment loss, scarring, and delay healing)

  • For 30 days, please avoid:

  1. Tanning (outdoor & indoor)
